What is the big deal about “exotic” species of fish?

Question by : What is the big deal about “exotic” species of fish?
Red-bellied piranhas, giant snakeheads, silver arowanas, red-tailed catfish, peacock bass, etc.

What is the big deal about having these predatory fish among others as pets? Piranhas are rather boring if you ask me, they don’t really do anything. Snakeheads are illegal. Arowanas are too big as are red-tailed catfish. Peacock bass are more for catch and release sportfishing.

I got bored one day and started looking at resolved questions in the fish section (as of right now there are 337,450 resolved questions) and I noticed there are tons of questions regarding those few species of fish I listed, among other exotics. Why? What is the big deal about them? What is so special about them?

I’d appreciate an explanation if it’s at all possible, but I guess well thought out opinions are welcome, too.
Great answers, that’s what I wanted. But what about when someone wants an alligator gar or a goliath tigerfish or a payara or some other ridiculous fish to keep in a tank? Same thing or what?
Sorry catx, I should have been a little more open. True, snakeheads aren’t illegal everywhere. Actually, that was the wrong choice of word. Instead of illegal, I should have said invasive species. That’s better. All species of snakeheads are illegal and considered invasive in the US, which is where I’m from.

Personally, I like piranhas, snakeheads, catfish, and arowana. But, this is because they are all carnivore. I’m not interested in bass, not in the slightest, actually.
I’m guessing people are so intrigued by these fish because they get big, Snakeheads and Piranhas have major teeth(Which a lot of people find amusing or cool).
People probably like catfish and bass because of their size, too(Same going for Arowana)
I think people have a thing for arowana, though, because of their scales(Well, that’s my opinion) AND because its a big fish.
People don’t really want a small, 2-inch fish that can’t do anything but dart around the tank. They like to see monster-fish, something that could gobble that two-inch fish.

What are the regulations regarding bringing betta fish from US to Canada?

Question by : What are the regulations regarding bringing betta fish from US to Canada?
I live in Canada and recently lost my two betta fish. I now have an empty 10 gallon and want to get a new one. I was looking into some fin varieties that I can’t find in Canada (halfmoon, double-tail, etc) and know that the Petco in Bellingham might have some. Are there any specific regulations that could prohibit me from taking a day trip to Petco, and then bringing a fish back into Canada?

Best answer:

Answer by Rupert E
Your not supposed to bring plants, animals and certian foods across the border because they may contain diseases that are not found in canada now so they don’t want them being brought here and causing an out break in the plant and animal populations here.

Q&A: where is a good place to camp and fish in saskatchewan this season?

Question by : where is a good place to camp and fish in saskatchewan this season?
looking for ideas for a campground on a nice saskatchewan lake where there is good sport fishing this season for walleye and northern pike. In the north western quarter of the province.
We have rv and do not need any hookups or amenities. The more rustic the better as long as we can pull our rv and boat in.

Q&A: Do you need a permit to fish in San Felipe, Baja California?

Question by JellyBeans17: Do you need a permit to fish in San Felipe, Baja California?
Just in general fishing, not a certain type of fish.
(And not sportfishing either.)

Best answer:

Answer by morena cabello negro
I’ve gone to San Felipe, and I don’t think you need a certain permit to fish over there. You know, in vacations, lots of people take their boats to fish over there and nobody says nothing.
In case any authority comes to you and fines you, you wouldn’t have to pay much anyway
